His multi-coloured pelt shone in the moonlight like a lie. It made it look more colorful, more vibrant than it truly was. Larkmoon glanced further into the opening, spotting a shimmering pool not too far away.
"Must be it," he whispered nervously to himself. "Moonpool."
Larkmoon strutted towards the glowing area, water reflecting the high moon. Like his name. How fitting. As he paced towards it slowly, he could feel ghostly images and feelings swerving in the air around him. His ears picked up mews from what he knew were familiar voices of his past, both as RiverClan and his new home, WindClan.
He felt like turning tail to run. But he settled down on a rock beside the pool, and let himself drift off to sleep.
An elegant silver-black she-cat greeting him, and Larkmoon had to hold back a yowl. His mentor, and the former WindClan Leader stood before him. Her brown, caring eyes weren't holding a sad look, despite her death of only a few nights before.
"Larkmoon." she started. "You know me as Ravenstar, your leader. You have followed me, and now it is your turn. With this night, I shall give you Leadership. Use it to rule your Clan without fail." she mewed at him. Larkmoon could only watch as she touched her nose to his pelt, and a sharp shock racked his frame. Before he could say goodbye, she disappeared, and was replaced by another.
His green-blue eyes widened even more at the next cat. "Son..." she spoke slowly. "I am Fallensky, your mother. I give you love. Use it to find a mate and bring more kits forth to you clan." Another pain struck through him, making him whimper like a kit.
The third stepped forward, one he recognized less. "I am Leopardstar, the old leader of RiverClan." she meowed. In her eyes was a kind of power, one that echoed to those around her. "I give you Justice, so you may truthfully judge those around you to make your choices the best."
On came another cat. His black pelt looked oddly familiar, but Larkmoon could not place him. "I am Crowfeather. I give you Loyalty. You will have the power to hold true to what you believe, be it not what others say." his cold eyes closed as he gave Larkmoon the fourth zap of power.
Another female came up. "Tawnypelt is my name. I'm giving you the ability to help those less powerful than you, like kits and elders. It is Compassion, and it is now yours." She gave him a zap, and a kind look. He knew that look, but once again, was oddly unable to place it.
The sixth cat arose from his place. Long gray fur ran down his sides, and his eyes were emotionless. A clear sign that he did not die within the boundaries of the Clans. "I am Graystripe." the tom meowed. "I give you Courage. Don't be afraid to make your own decisions, and sacrifice yourself for purposes other than your own." he padded away slowly, making Larkstar wonder what kind of fate had befallen this warrior.
Out came the seventh cat, one that looked out of place. As if she didn't belong with StarClan, never did have any purpose with them. Yet her kind eyes showed that she had tried her hardest to believe. "I am Mothwing. If you're ever in trouble, remember to wish. I give you the skill of Hope." she said, and disappeared.
The eighth cat was another Larkmoon recognized fairly easily. His second sister, Opalsun, who had fallen to the jaws of a stray fox. "Hello brother." she mewed, shocking him at first. "I give you Wisdom..." the she-cat stumbled, obviously regretting leaving camp without him. "... so that you'll know to make the right decisions and be smart about them." she turned, but froze, ears drooping. "... don't make the same mistakes I did."
Larkmoon's eyes cast downwards to the floor. Opalsun. He missed her greatly. The sharp pain she had given him was more than just a memory, it was pure love that he didn't even remember from his mother.
The final, and ninth cat stepped forwards. He was a brown tabby-tom, fur almost the same as Larkmoon's himself. Even the details were like his own. He knew that in some way, they were distantly related. The cat's eyes just said it. "I am Onestar. Before the fire, I was the ruling cat of WindClan. Now I am nothing more than a spirit." he paused. "I give you Trust. Use it, and live long in the minds of all those beneath you, even after you yourself have passed on." he nosed Larkmoon's pelt, and the greatest amount of pain the soon-to-be Leader had ever felt coursed through him.
He beared it as his own burden. Larkmoon opened his eyes to see all nine cats gazing at him. Once again, Ravenstar stepped forwards. "You have received your nine lives, Larkmoon. You are now known to the world as Larkstar."
He opened his eyes, as the picture faded out. The tom blinked twice, and swore he could hear the spirits chanting his new name around him. Smiling to himself, and whispering a solemn goodbye, he strode out of the Moonpool.
I am Larkstar, the leader of WindClan.
"I will do all I can." he mewed.
The world awaited him, and he had yet to see it.
"Must be it," he whispered nervously to himself. "Moonpool."
